I felt my hands begin to shake.
“Are you trying to tell me…”
“Yes. This little girl was born from that embryo.”
I turned toward my mother.
“But how? How could you possibly carry that baby? You’re 82 years old!”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“This wasn’t a natural pregnancy. It was made possible through reproductive medical procedures and extraordinary medical supervision.”
I still couldn’t believe it.
“But why? Who agreed to something so dangerous?”
My mother raised her eyes.
“I did, Sarah. I was the one who asked for it.”
“Why, Mom? You could have died!”
She gently squeezed my hand.
“Because I had already lost my daughter once. And then one day, I discovered that a little life could still be born from her.”
Daniel explained that the clinic had changed ownership years earlier, and the records concerning the frozen embryos had been transferred to a specialized center.
