Emily was my little sister.
She had died 34 years earlier, when she was only twenty years old.
At the time, I was already married and living in another city.
Losing Emily was the greatest tragedy our family had ever experienced.
For years, my mother couldn’t even say her name without bursting into tears.
“What does Emily have to do with any of this?” I whispered.
My mother looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.”
The man sat down.
“Before your sister died, she was receiving treatment at our clinic. She was very young, but she already knew that her health problems might prevent her from becoming a mother someday.”
I listened in disbelief.
“And?”
“Emily was deeply in love with a young man named Michael. They were planning to get married.”
I remembered Michael.
But after Emily’s death, he had disappeared from our lives.
Daniel continued.
“They decided to preserve Emily’s eggs so they could start a family in the future. However, when Emily became seriously ill, an embryo was also created during her treatment and frozen at the medical center.”
