Emily and Michael’s written agreements contained restrictions, so for a long time, no one could determine whether the preserved embryo could legally be used.
Everything had changed about a year earlier.
Michael, now a man approaching sixty, had returned to town.

I interrupted the doctor.
“But why my mother? Why didn’t you choose a younger woman who could carry the baby?”
Daniel fell silent.
My mother answered.
“Because I didn’t want to ask someone else to carry my daughter’s child. And when I learned that it might theoretically be possible to prepare my body for pregnancy, I asked the doctors to investigate.”
Tears streamed down my face.
“Mom, do you understand how much danger you put yourself in?”
“I do.”
Daniel interrupted.
“We warned her repeatedly. Pregnancy at this age carries extremely high risks. Cases like this are exceptionally rare in medicine, and ordinary clinics do not perform such procedures. Your mother’s case was discussed extensively by specialists.”
