At 3:17 a.m., Detective Hayes returned.
She wasn’t alone.
A second investigator, Daniel Price, entered behind her carrying a folder.
“Mrs. Brooks, we need to ask you about a woman named Vanessa.”
My stomach tightened.
“She’s on the recording.”
“Do you know her?”
“No.”
“Have you ever heard of the Willow Creek Wellness Center?”
I shook my head.
Price opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph of a low brick building surrounded by trees, approximately twenty miles outside Franklin.
It had darkened windows, a gated driveway, and no visible sign.
“Does this look familiar?”
“No.”
Hayes exchanged a glance with her colleague.
“The property has been rented through a company connected to your husband.”
I stared at her.
“Adrian works in corporate finance.”
“We know.”
“What does that building have to do with my daughter?”
“We’re investigating that.”
I hated the measured way she spoke.
I wanted answers.
I wanted someone to tell me exactly what had happened.
