I gripped the edge of the chair.
“Could that explain why she kept losing consciousness?”
“It could. It is one of the possibilities we’re taking very seriously.”
I thought about Cameron carrying her limp body through our front door.
Adrian telling me she was clumsy.
The bruises.
The tears.
The times I’d been persuaded not to call an ambulance.
Someone had deliberately placed my daughter in danger.
The physician spoke gently.
“We’re also documenting her injuries. Some need further evaluation, and a specialist will speak with you about how best to support Maya.”
I nodded.
Then I asked the question I’d been afraid to say aloud.
“Is she going to be okay?”
“She’s stable. We’re keeping her under observation. We’ll know more as the tests come back.”
I looked through the glass toward Maya’s hospital bed.
She was sleeping again, this time under medical supervision.
I had never been so grateful to see a heart monitor.
