But the investigators were careful not to claim more than they knew.
Then Price asked another question.
“Has your husband ever mentioned a family trust associated with your daughter?”
I frowned.
“Her grandfather left money for her education.”
“How much?”
“About four million dollars.”
The room became very still.
“My father created the trust before he died,” I explained. “It’s supposed to pay for her education and provide financial security when she’s older.”
“Who manages it?”
“An independent trustee. My father’s attorney helped arrange everything.”
“Has your husband ever asked to access it?”
I hesitated.
“Yes.”
Hayes leaned forward.
“When?”
“Last year. Adrian said he had an investment opportunity that could significantly increase the fund’s value. I refused.”
“How did he react?”
“He was angry.”
“Did he bring it up again?”
I remembered an argument from three months earlier.
Adrian had stood in our kitchen and accused me of treating him like a stranger.
