Lucas learned not to surprise him from behind.
I learned that Cole slept with the television on because silence reminded him of lockdown.
Nothing was romantic in the movie sense.
It was better.
It was real.
Then, on the eighth evening, Cole came into the kitchen carrying a steel lockbox.
Everything changed.
I was washing dishes.
Lucas was studying at the table.
Cole placed the box between us.
It was old, scratched, and heavy.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“Something my father left.”
“Money?”
“No.”
“Then I’m less interested.”
He didn’t smile.
That scared me.
Lucas noticed too.
He closed his laptop.
Cole sat down.
“There’s something about our marriage I never told you.”
The room seemed to shrink.
I dried my hands.
“What?”
“My mother didn’t select you randomly.”
“I already knew she investigated me.”
“Not like this.”
He pushed the box toward me.
I didn’t touch it.
