“Cole.”
“Open it.”
“No. You talk first.”
His throat moved.
“My father created a protective clause in the Mercer family trust before his health collapsed.”
I crossed my arms.
“What kind of clause?”
“If I married while incarcerated and later succeeded in overturning the major fraud conviction, my legal spouse would automatically receive temporary co-control over certain foundation and trust assets.”
I stared at him.
Lucas sat completely still.
“Why?”
“My father suspected someone inside the family was manipulating accounts. He wanted an outside person attached to me—someone Evelyn and Brent couldn’t remove easily.”
A sick feeling entered my stomach.
“And your mother knew this?”
“Yes.”
“So why would she arrange the marriage?”
Cole looked at the box.
“Because she believed she could choose the spouse.”
I felt cold.
I opened it.
Inside was a folder.
A handwritten file.
Photocopies.
Financial records.
And a page with my name at the top.
