Cole walked out wearing a borrowed navy jacket and shoes that looked slightly too big.
He paused when he saw us.
For all the letters and visits, none of us knew what to do without glass between us.
Lucas solved it.
He walked forward.
“You’re shorter than I expected.”
Cole stared.
Then laughed.
So did I.
It was awkward.
Ridiculous.
Perfect.
I expected Cole to want to go to his mother’s house.
Instead, he stood beside my car.
“Where do I go?”
I opened the passenger door.
“With us.”
His eyes met mine.
“You mean that?”
“You’re still legally my husband.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
I swallowed.
“I know.”
Then I kissed him.
For the first time.
In a courthouse parking lot with Lucas shouting, “I am literally standing right here.”
For one week, we tried to become a family.
Cole learned where I kept the coffee.
