I couldn’t believe how quietly she said it.
“Megan, I’m not asking you to relive something painful. I’m asking why you made me feel like a stranger to my own grandson.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I knew what you’d think.”
“What would I think?”
“That I was careless. That I shouldn’t have been trusted with him.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes, I do.”
Her certainty startled me.
Josh pulled out a chair.
“Megan, sit down. Please.”
She stayed standing.
Eventually, she began telling me about the accident.
Finn had been six weeks old. Megan was preparing his bath when she accidentally knocked over a container of hot water.
Josh was home, and they took Finn for medical treatment immediately.
Megan remembered every frightening moment, even though Finn recovered.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about how quickly it happened,” she said. “One second, everything was fine.”
