Josh came through the door first. Megan followed, still wearing her Halloween outfit.
“Where’s Finn?” she asked immediately.
“He’s sleeping,” I said. “I took off his costume because he was overheating.”
Her expression changed.
“You undressed him?”
“He was miserable, Megan.”
“I specifically told you not to!”
Josh stepped between us.
“Megan, Mom called because she saw the scars.”
Megan went completely still.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she turned toward me.
“You had no right.”
I stared at her.
“No right to make my grandson comfortable?”
“You don’t understand.”
“You’re right,” I said. “I don’t. You’ve kept that baby covered for nine months, and now I discover there was an accident nobody bothered to tell me about.”
Megan looked away.
Josh exhaled.
“Megan, I thought you told Mom.”
“I know.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
She folded her arms.
“Because I didn’t want to discuss it.”
