Josh reached for her hand.
“The doctors told us he was healing well.”
“I know what they told us,” Megan replied.
Her voice broke.
“But every time I looked at his shoulder, I remembered.”
She explained that after the accident, she called her own mother for reassurance.
Instead, her mother asked how she could have been so careless.
Then she said something Megan couldn’t forget.
“If Josh’s family sees those marks, they’ll never let you forget what happened.”
Megan wiped her face.
“She told me his mother would never trust me alone with him again.”
I felt a wave of disbelief.
“Megan, I would never take Finn away from you.”
“You don’t know how it feels,” she whispered, “to look at your baby and see a reminder of the worst mistake you’ve ever made.”
For the first time, I understood that she wasn’t simply trying to control everything.
