“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“I thought Megan had.”
“Well, she didn’t.”
Josh sounded genuinely upset.
“Listen, we’ll come home. Just keep him comfortable, okay?”
After hanging up, I removed the heavy outer costume and left Finn in his lightweight shirt and diaper.
Within minutes, his crying eased.
I offered his bottle again, and this time he drank.
I watched him settle against me, wondering how something so important could have happened without my knowing.
Josh had been there. He knew about the accident.
But Megan had spent months making sure I never saw its reminder.
The longer I thought about it, the more hurt I felt.
Every rejected offer to help.
Every hurried diaper change behind a closed door. Every time Megan had taken Finn from my arms.
Had she believed I couldn’t be trusted with the truth?
About 40 minutes later, headlights swept across my living room window.
