“And the photograph?”
Michael managed a faint smile.
“Yesterday, we arranged a small dinner together. Emily finally agreed that we should tell you everything this week. We were celebrating because we’d arranged for the doctor to explain personally why you needed further testing.”
Emily continued.
“We took that picture after dinner. I told Michael that if we could convince Mom to go to the doctor, it would be our greatest victory.”
“Then why did you write that you hoped I wouldn’t find out?”
My daughter lowered her head.
“Because we wanted to explain everything calmly instead of making you panic again.”
I sat across from them, not knowing what to say.
On one hand, I felt an enormous sense of relief.
On the other, I was deeply hurt.
They really had been deceiving me for months.
And because of their secrecy, I had almost lost my trust in the two people I loved most.
