“But why?”
“Because after what happened to Grandma, you couldn’t even bear to hear the word doctor.”
Everything seemed to stop for a moment.
My mother had died six years earlier from a severe heart condition.
We had spent her final months going from one hospital to another.
Ever since then, I’d avoided serious medical examinations.
I knew it wasn’t right.
But I was afraid.urm
Emily approached and took my hand.
“When Michael told me you were feeling sick again, I panicked. We decided to speak to specialists first and find out how we could help you.”
“And the hotel?”
“There was a medical conference there,” Michael explained. “Dr. Wilson was one of the invited specialists. We went to speak with him.”
I remembered watching them leave the hotel.
There had been nothing particularly suspicious about what they were carrying or doing.
I was the one who had immediately imagined the worst.
