“It was my request,” Emily said.
“What was your request?”
My daughter slowly sat down.
She was so pale that I instinctively moved closer.
“Emily, are you sick?”
She shook her head.
“I’m fine, Mom. But we were scared for you.”
The doctor introduced himself.
His name was Dr. Wilson, and he specialized in heart disease.
When I heard those words, I assumed Michael must be seriously ill.
“Has something happened to Michael?”
“No,” the doctor replied. “We’re here because of your health.”
I actually laughed.
“My health? I feel perfectly fine!”
Dr. Wilson grew serious.
“Six months ago, you underwent some tests at our hospital. Do you remember?”
I remembered.
Once, I had fainted at work.
An ambulance had taken me to the hospital. The doctors ran several tests and eventually sent me home.
I assumed exhaustion had caused it.
“At that time, your test results showed some concerning changes related to your heart,” the doctor continued. “We recommended additional examinations.”
