My Sons Barber Told Me To Check Behind His Ear Until Police Arrived At My House

The camera outside our house made sense too.

Derek could watch our movements.

He could confirm the case had arrived.

He could know when we left for the storage unit.

He had thought through almost everything.

Almost.

He hadn’t anticipated a barber named Marcus noticing something strange behind Ethan’s ear.

And he hadn’t anticipated that Ryan had already left the real truth behind.

The police decided to use Monday.

That was the day Derek expected to meet Ethan near school.

Ethan never went near him.

An officer remained close to the school.

Detectives waited in unmarked cars.

I sat in one of them.

About ten minutes after school ended, Derek appeared.

I had not seen him since before Ryan died.

He looked older.

Grayer.

Otherwise, completely ordinary.

That was what disturbed me most.

He stood across the street smiling warmly as children came outside.

He looked exactly like a friendly uncle waiting for his nephew.

Two detectives approached him.

Derek immediately played innocent.

He was just there to see family.

He had only wanted to give Ethan a few things that had belonged to Ryan.

Then a detective showed him a photograph.

The hidden camera from my porch.

Derek looked at the image and immediately said,

“That doesn’t prove I put it there.”

The detective had never accused him of putting it there.

He had simply shown him a picture.

An innocent person might have asked what the camera was.

Derek defended himself against an accusation that had not yet been made.

That mistake mattered.

He was arrested that evening.

I expected watching him being taken away to feel satisfying.

It didn’t.

Mostly, I felt tired.

Sad.

Then, several days later, Ethan asked to speak to Derek.

“No.”

I answered before he even finished asking.

The detective later explained that, if allowed at all, it could be short and supervised.

Ethan kept asking.

Not whining.

Not begging.

Quietly.

Seriously.

Eventually I asked him why.

“I want to ask why he said you’d throw Dad’s things away.”

I looked at him.

Of everything Derek had done, that was what hurt Ethan most.

The lie about me.

So I agreed.

Under police supervision, with me sitting beside him, Ethan spoke to Derek one last time.

Derek tried that warm smile again.

“Hey, Buddy.”

Hearing Ryan’s nickname for Ethan in Derek’s mouth made my skin crawl.
