My mother-in-law put her hands on me, then drove me to the emergency room like she was doing me a favor and told the triage nurse I was clumsy. What she did not know is that I spent nine years as a forensic accountant, and that six months earlier I had found the hole in her books — and that the account she had come to my apartment about was one of the places the money sat.

I said I wasn’t there to tell her anything.

I have thought about Ines Bardo more than I have thought about my husband.

Because there is a version of every one of these stories where the person who spoke up gets to be brave, and the reason I got to be that person is not that I am braver than her.

It is that I had nine years of a specialist career, savings in my own name, no children, and a professional network that would employ me the following Monday.

Bravery is a budget. Nobody tells you that.

I have gone round and round on this and it is the one part of the whole account where I have changed my mind twice.

For a while I wanted it to be true that she should have fought. It is cleaner. It means the system works for people who are willing to use it.

It isn’t true. She was offered a settlement and an accusation, by a woman with a lawyer, and she was told by her own lawyer that the accusation would follow her either way for three years. She was forty-three with a fourteen-year-old.

The correct decision, on the information she had, was the one she made.

The reason I got a different outcome is not that I was better. It is that I had been at this for nine years professionally and I knew, standing at a kitchen counter in March, exactly what a document is worth and exactly which three addresses to send it to.

She had none of that. She had a printout and an office door.

Ines Bardo did the same thing I did. She just did it four years earlier, alone, to the wrong person, with no budget.

She gave a statement eventually, when the state got involved, and the settlement was set aside, and her record is clear now. She works at a school district office. She has not been paid a dollar of what was taken from her and she says she does not want to think about it any more, and I have respected that completely.

Now Dorian.
