Her husband, Alex, was someone Sean considered a friend.
We had gone on vacations together. We had celebrated holidays together. We had shared barbecues, birthdays, and countless ordinary evenings.
They were practically family.
And now my husband was suggesting that we exchange spouses as though we were trading cars for a weekend.
I let out a nervous laugh.
“That’s a terrible joke, Sean.”
“I’m not joking.”
My smile disappeared.
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
“Think about it. We’ve been together for eighteen years. Sometimes relationships become predictable. Maybe spending a week with different people would make us appreciate each other more.”
“Or destroy our marriage.”
“You’re making it sound worse than it is.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
He spoke about it as if he were proposing a new restaurant, not a situation that could permanently damage four people’s relationships.
“What about feelings?” I asked. “What about boundaries? What about the fact that you are talking about my best friend?”
