The woman looked past me toward the living room.
“Are they all here?” she asked.
“Yes,” I replied.
She nodded.
“Good. Then we can finally stop pretending.”
I stepped aside.
She entered the house.
The moment Sean saw her, the color drained from his face.
Nancy stood so abruptly that her glass nearly fell from her hand.
Alex looked at the man behind the woman, then at Sean.
“What is going on?” he demanded.
Nobody answered.
The woman placed the envelope on the coffee table.
“My name is Rebecca,” she said. “And before any of you make another decision about your marriages, I think you need to know why this arrangement was proposed in the first place.”
Sean shook his head.
“Rebecca, you shouldn’t be here.”
She looked directly at him.
“You had months to tell the truth. You chose not to.”
I felt my heart pounding.
Months.
Not days.
