I had never asked Adrian to contribute to the purchase.
When we married, he moved in.
I paid the mortgage and property taxes.
He contributed to utilities, groceries, and ordinary household expenses.
We sometimes argued about money.
But he’d never been given authority to borrow against the condo or sell it.
Now a stranger was photographing my home for financing I knew nothing about.
“Are you applying for a loan?” I asked.
Adrian looked toward the police.
“Can we not discuss our private finances in front of strangers?”
I stared at him.
“You changed my locks and placed my belongings in the hallway.”
“Because you never listen!”
The officer stepped between us.
“Let’s keep our voices down.”
Susan slowly closed her laptop.
“I think I should leave.”
The female officer looked at her.
“Before you go, would you be willing to explain what you were asked to do?”
Susan nodded.
