The hallway seemed to tilt.
I turned toward Adrian.
“What financing application?”
He didn’t answer.
Marjorie stepped backward.
Susan looked at me.
“Are you Natalie Brooks?”
“Yes.”
Her expression changed.
“Oh.”
She glanced between us.
“I was told you wouldn’t be available this evening.”
I took a slow breath.
“Who hired you?”
Susan looked toward Adrian.
“He arranged the appointment through the lending coordinator.”
The officer turned to my husband.
“Sir, can you explain?”
Adrian crossed his arms.
“This is a private financial matter between my wife and me.”
I looked at him.
“No, Adrian. This is my condo. What financing?”
He stared at me.
I felt my heartbeat in my throat.
I’d bought Unit 2902 eight years earlier.
Two years before meeting Adrian.
At the time, I was a twenty-eight-year-old hospital administrator working long shifts and saving every extra dollar.
The down payment came from my savings and a modest inheritance my grandparents left me.
