My Daughter’s Innocent Question on Father’s Day Changed Everything (And Taught Me the True Meaning of Presence)

Almost.

But Sunday was three days away.

So I waited.

Father’s Day Arrived

Father’s Day Arrived

I woke at 6:15 Sunday morning.

Melissa was asleep beside me.

I stared at the ceiling.

I hadn’t truly slept.

At 7:30, Lily jumped onto our bed.

“Happy Father’s Day!”

She handed me a card covered in glitter.

Inside was a drawing of our family.

Melissa.

Lily.

Me.

And another man.

Four stick figures.

My stomach twisted.

“Who’s that?” I asked quietly.

Lily pointed.

“My other daddy.”

Melissa froze.

It lasted less than a second.
