Mark looked down at the table.
“I think he believed he was protecting you.”
I wanted to be angry. Part of me was furious that Daniel had allowed me to believe everything was normal. But another part of me remembered the way he had been staring at our children’s school photographs, the quiet sighs, and the nights when he seemed too exhausted to speak.
Perhaps he had been trying to hold together a world that he feared was falling apart.
Then Mark revealed something else.
The Sacrifice I Never Saw
“There’s another reason I wanted you to know,” Mark said.
He explained that Daniel had recently been offered an opportunity to return to work through a different company. The position paid less than his previous job, but it offered a stable income and a chance to rebuild his career.
I should have been happy.
Instead, I asked the question that had been troubling me since I entered the building.
