He looked at me then, and I saw something I had not seen in months: relief.
Not because his problems had disappeared, but because he no longer had to pretend that they didn’t exist.
What Happened After That Day
We did not solve everything in a single afternoon.
We went home, sat at the kitchen table, and looked honestly at our finances. We discussed what expenses we could reduce, how long our savings could support us, and what kind of work Daniel wanted to pursue next.
There were difficult conversations. There were moments when fear returned, especially when another job application went unanswered.
But something important had changed.
Daniel no longer had to invent explanations for why he was tired or distracted. I no longer had to guess what was troubling him. We could discuss problems before they grew into something larger.
He eventually accepted a position with a smaller company. The salary was lower than before, and the work was different, but he gradually regained his confidence.
