“Sarah? What are you doing here?”
I placed the lunch basket on the desk.
“I came to surprise you.”
He looked at the basket, then at my face.
“What happened?”
I wanted to shout. I wanted to ask how he could keep something so important from me. I wanted to demand why he had allowed me to worry about his distance without telling me the truth.
Instead, I asked quietly, “Why didn’t you tell me you lost your job?”
Daniel froze.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
“Mark told you.”
“Yes.”
He covered his face with both hands.
“I’m sorry.”
Those two words broke through the anger I had been holding.
Daniel explained that when he first lost his position, he had convinced himself it would be temporary. He planned to find another job within a few weeks and tell me once everything was settled.
