I got on a plane to my mother’s hospital and my husband was eleven rows in front of me with my best friend. There was a note of hers in my handbag that she’d written on my fridge that morning.

And when they did, I took her side.

Loudly. To about eleven people. I had Saskia in my kitchen crying on a Sunday and I told her Dev had changed and that she had done everything she could, and I said something about him being paranoid, and I said it more than once.

I rang his mother. I am going to put that in because it is the worst thing I have done in this entire business.

I rang Dev’s mother in the April to say I was thinking of them and that these things are nobody’s fault, and that woman was very quiet on that phone and I thought she was upset.

She knew. Obviously she knew. Her son had told her in 2024.

And Immy is eleven and has been at my house about four hundred times, and she is at mine most Thursdays, and in the April of this year she asked me in the car whether her dad was all right.
