Whenever I questioned it, she gave me the same explanation.
“He’s always cold, Linda. Please don’t undress him.”
At first, I assumed she was simply an anxious first-time mother.
But it went beyond clothing.
Megan never let me change Finn’s diaper, give him a bath, or help dress him.
If I offered to hold him while she made his bottle, she’d suddenly decide he needed something.
I could count on one hand how many times I’d held him in nine months.
My son, Josh, didn’t seem concerned.
“Megan’s just particular about his routine, Mom,” he’d tell me. “Give her some time.”
So I tried.
Then Halloween came.
Around 6:00 p.m., Josh texted to say that he and Megan had been invited to a Halloween party and needed me to babysit for a few hours.
Before I could reply, another message appeared.
“We’re outside. Can you come get him? We’re running late.”
