My Husband Thought My Injuries Could Be Explained Until the Recording Played

The first thing my husband did when he understood the dashcam had kept recording was stop looking at me and start looking at the truck driver.

Until then, he had been acting as if the hospital room still belonged to him.

He stood near the foot of my bed with his arms folded, answering questions before I could answer them myself. When a nurse asked when the injuries had happened, he said I had slipped near the back entrance. When the doctor asked why the damage across my back looked so different from the marks across my stomach, he said I had fallen against rough wood and panicked afterward.

Each time he spoke, my mother-in-law nodded as though they had rehearsed the same explanation.

Then the truck driver said quietly, “My camera was still running.”

My husband’s face changed.

It was not guilt. Not yet.

It was calculation.

He asked what the camera could actually see.

The driver looked at me before answering. “Not much through the gate.”

My husband exhaled.

Then the driver added, “But it could hear.”

The room went silent.

I watched my husband’s hands uncross from his chest.
