Dandelion water: real benefits, safe recipe and precautions before drinking it.

Who should avoid it or consult a doctor first?

The NCCIH warns that there are theoretical reasons to suspect that dandelion may interact with medications for diabetes, anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, and diuretics, among others. It also notes that little is known about its safety in larger quantities during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

You should consult beforehand if you are taking medications for blood pressure, sugar, anticoagulants, diuretics, lithium, antibiotics, or heart treatments.

WebMD also notes that dandelions can cause discomfort such as diarrhea, indigestion, or stomach upset, and that people allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, such as ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums, and calendula, may be at higher risk of allergic reaction. Caution is

advised if you have diabetes or high blood sugar.

Some publications claim that dandelion water “lowers blood sugar.” That statement can be dangerous if presented as a treatment.

Diabetes requires medical management, a proper diet, monitoring, and medication when prescribed. Tea does not replace metformin, insulin, or any other prescribed treatment.
