Spelling and Word Choice: Small Differences Matter
Another popular type of challenge asks readers to choose the correct spelling or identify the word that fits a sentence.
Some English words sound alike but have different meanings.
Consider the following examples:
Their refers to something belonging to people.
There refers to a place or can introduce certain grammatical constructions.
They’re is a contraction of “they are.”
All three words are pronounced similarly in many varieties of English, but they cannot be substituted for one another in every sentence.
For example:
“They’re bringing their books over there.”
Each word performs a different function.
Spelling challenges can also involve words that differ by only one letter. A missing letter, an extra letter, or a misplaced vowel can change a word or make it incorrect.
The best strategy is to consider both spelling and meaning. Ask yourself whether the word is written properly and whether it makes sense in the sentence.
