For someone without stable housing, personal care can become especially difficult.
A shower may be unavailable. Clean clothes may be expensive or impossible to store safely. Access to a bathroom, laundry facilities, and basic grooming supplies may depend on finding a shelter or public service that is accessible and available.
Over time, these obstacles can affect a person’s appearance.
Hair may become difficult to manage, clothing may deteriorate, and skin can suffer from exposure to weather and environmental conditions. Exhaustion and stress may also become visible.
Unfortunately, strangers often interpret these outward signs without considering the circumstances behind them.
They may assume that someone who appears unkempt is irresponsible, unwilling to work, or incapable of contributing to society.
Those assumptions can be deeply unfair.
A person’s appearance cannot tell us the full story of their life. It does not reveal their skills, ambitions, experiences, or the circumstances that brought them to their current situation.
