They would photograph the site, document its surroundings and determine whether the aircraft’s identification numbers could be recovered.
The remains would then be examined carefully.
Even after decades, aircraft components can provide valuable information.
Investigators might examine the engines.
They could analyze structural damage.
They might look for evidence of fire.
They could determine the aircraft’s approximate direction of travel at the time of impact.
The position of the wreckage could also help reconstruct the final moments of the flight.
## Why the Passengers Would Not Be “Found” as They Were
One of the most sensational elements in some versions of viral missing-plane stories is the suggestion that the passengers were somehow discovered inside the aircraft decades later in remarkably preserved condition.
That is not how real crash investigations work.
Human remains are affected by environmental conditions, decomposition, scavenging, moisture, temperature and countless other factors.
A crash site preserved in an extremely cold or dry environment could potentially preserve some remains or belongings better than expected, but dramatic claims about passengers being found exactly as they were decades earlier should be treated with extreme skepticism.
