No more protecting each other from old pain by hiding the stories that shaped us.
Weeks later, Toby’s drawing was still inside Brandon’s flight bag.
The old wings stayed clipped inside Toby’s backpack.
Every so often, he would touch them before school and tell somebody his dad was a pilot.
But the story changed slightly.
“He almost quit once,” Toby would add.
Then he would smile.
“And somebody helped him keep going.”
That Saturday began because I wanted to give my son a perfect surprise.
Instead, an announcement from the cockpit taught both of us something better.
The people we love are usually carrying stories we cannot see.
Sometimes knowing those stories changes the picture.
Sometimes it makes the words BEST PILOT EVER mean more than they did before.
