Fortunately, one inexpensive household item may help solve the problem: white vinegar.
Why Vinegar Works
White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help dissolve mineral deposits, break down soap residue, and neutralize odors. Unlike some commercial cleaners, it is widely available, affordable, and easy to use as part of a regular cleaning routine.
Many homeowners use vinegar to freshen washing machines because it can reach areas that are difficult to clean manually, including internal pipes, drum surfaces, and detergent compartments.
Step 1: Clean Removable Parts
Before running any cleaning cycle, remove detachable components such as:
Detergent drawers
Filters
Fabric softener compartments
Plastic covers or inserts
Wash these parts separately using warm water and a soft sponge. Scrub away any visible residue, mold, or accumulated detergent. Allow everything to dry completely before reinstalling.
Step 2: Run a Vinegar Cleaning Cycle
To clean the inside of the washer:
Pour white vinegar into the detergent compartment.
Run an empty cycle using warm or hot water.
Allow the cycle to finish completely.
As the vinegar circulates through the machine, it may help loosen buildup and flush away residue that collects inside the drum and internal components.
For machines with noticeable buildup, some people also add baking soda during a separate cleaning cycle for additional cleaning power.
