Epilogue: A Bright Horizon
Six months after the wedding night, the warm afternoon sun shone brightly over the lush, rolling green hills of the Sterling Estate.
The legal fallout had been total and complete. Doña Teresa was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison for embezzlement and fraud, while the entire fifty-million-dollar estate was legally restored to my sole control.
Mateo and I used a portion of the recovered funds to expand the northern K-9 sanctuary, building a state-of-the-art veterinary medical facility named The Rachid, Moncho & Lupita Center, providing free medical care to retired service animals across the entire country.
I stood on the wide stone porch of our home, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking out over the manicured lawn.
In the yard, three healthy, happy rescue dogs—Rachid, Moncho, and Lupita—were running playing fetch with Mateo, who was laughing openly in the warm sunlight, free from the shadows of his past.
