The Consequences of Sleeping Without

Book Dermatology Consults

What happens when you sleep without cleaning your eyes?

Throughout the day, the eyelids accumulate oil, sweat, dead skin cells, dust, environmental particles and cosmetic products. Mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow can remain around the eyelashes if they are not removed before  sleeping. This buildup can irritate the delicate skin around the eyes and may contribute to blocked eyelid glands.

The meibomian glands, located within the eyelids, produce an oily component of tears that helps prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. Problems affecting these glands can contribute to dry-eye symptoms. Demodex blepharitis is also frequently associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye. Nature

Poor eyelid hygiene does not automatically mean that a person will develop Demodex infestation. Nevertheless, maintaining appropriate eyelid hygiene is an important part of protecting the ocular surface and managing eyelid conditions.

Possible consequences for the eyes

One of the first consequences may be eye irritation. A person may wake up with itchy, red or uncomfortable eyes. Some people experience burning or excessive watering, while others feel that there is something trapped in the eye.

Another possible consequence is dry eye. Demodex blepharitis can interfere with the normal tear film, and dry-eye disease occurs in more than half of patients with Demodex blepharitis according to an expert panel. PubMed Central (PMC)

Persistent inflammation can also affect the eyelashes. In more severe cases, eyelashes may become thinner, fall out or grow in an abnormal direction toward the eye. Untreated Demodex blepharitis may also be associated with recurrent eye infections and blurred vision. Cleveland Clinic

Why nighttime care matters

A simple nighttime routine can help reduce the accumulation of makeup, oils and debris around the eyes. Makeup should be removed gently before going to  sleep, avoiding vigorous rubbing of the eyelids. Clean hands are important before touching the eye area, and towels, washcloths and pillowcases should be kept clean.

For people who have already been diagnosed with Demodex blepharitis, an eye-care professional may recommend specific eyelid-cleaning measures. Current clinical guidance also emphasizes that treatment should be individualized rather than assuming that every case of eyelid irritation is caused by mites. PubMed+1

Parasites & Parasitic Diseases

It is also important to remember that the presence of Demodex mites is not necessarily a sign of poor hygiene. These microscopic organisms commonly live on human skin. The problem is an overgrowth associated with inflammation and symptoms. Cleveland Clinic
