A Hungry Boy With Big Dreams
Every morning, Daniel walked nearly four miles to school.
His shoes were worn so thin that he could feel the rocks beneath his feet. His backpack had been patched together so many times that it barely resembled the one his mother had purchased years earlier at a secondhand market.
But what hurt most wasn’t the long walk.
It was the hunger.
Daniel’s widowed father worked every job he could find, yet there were many mornings when breakfast simply wasn’t possible. Daniel learned to ignore the growling in his stomach during class, pretending to concentrate while secretly wondering when he might eat again.
Despite everything, he loved school.
He believed education was the only bridge leading away from poverty.
His teachers noticed his determination.
What they couldn’t always see was how difficult it was to focus while hungry.
