Silence.
Abigail turned toward him.
“You met her for forty minutes.”
“And I reviewed her medical history.”
“She fooled you.”
Then Mom stepped forward.
“No, Abigail. You fooled yourself.”
My wife looked at me.
Whatever mask she had been wearing finally cracked.
“You don’t understand what she’s done.”
“What has she done?”
“She hated me from the beginning.”
Mom sighed.
“I chose the flowers at your wedding.”
“You judged me.”
“I questioned why you needed access to Samuel’s accounts.”
Abigail’s face tightened.
There it was.
Something older than my deployment.
Older than Mom being locked away.
I looked between them.
“What happened before I left?”
Neither answered.
Then Mom held up the brass key.
“Take me to the bank.”
We drove downtown in two vehicles.
Abigail was not under arrest.
She could have left.
She didn’t.
That told me everything.
She needed to know what was in the box.
