PArt 2: When I came back home from deployment, my wife was telling the neighbors, “His mother has dementia. She keeps injuring herself.” t1

At 6:10 that morning, while she showered, I had replaced its contents.

Her brochures remained on top.

Her forms were still there.

But underneath them I had added everything.

Mom’s prior cognitive screening from seven months ago showing no significant impairment.

Bank records.

Account-change notices.

Security access logs.

Photographs Mom allowed me to take.

Copies of the suspicious transfer request.

A statement from Mom explaining she had been kept without her phone and sometimes locked inside her room.

And a sealed note from me:

PLEASE INTERVIEW MARGARET ALONE BEFORE MAKING ANY DETERMINATION.

POSSIBLE ELDER ABUSE AND FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION.

Dr. Leonard turned the first few pages.

Nothing changed.

Then he reached mine.

His eyes stopped.

He read another.

Then another.

Abigail continued talking.

“She becomes especially paranoid around money.”

Dr. Leonard looked at Mom.

“Does she?”

“Yes. She thinks people are stealing from her.”

He looked at the transfer request.

“Interesting.”
