PART 2: THE SMELL BETWEEN THE TWINS’ ROOMS LED EMILY TO A CLUE NO SPECIALIST HAD TESTED

Nathan whispered:

“And nobody checked what they installed.”

“No.”

“Why the ionizers?”

“Vendor recommendation.”

“Why monthly booster concentrate?”

“To keep the smell neutral.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I thought I was making the rooms feel like home.”

No villain.

A grieving house manager.

A grieving father.

A vendor overselling equipment.

A technician inheriting bad instructions.

Children caught inside all of it.

Nathan said nothing for a long time.

Then:

“What happens now?”

That was the correct question.

Maya answered.

“Remove the systems.”

“

You stay.”

She started crying.

He held up one hand.

“Not because nothing happened.”

She nodded.

“We redesign how household health decisions are approved.”

“Yes.”

“No medical equipment without independent review.”

“Yes.”

“And no one follows one of my orders without clarifying when the order is vague.”

That one was for himself.

Mrs. Bennett understood.

“So I can disagree?”

Nathan’s expression shifted.

“You should have been able to already.”
