Detective Ortiz returned at one in the morning. She did not seem pleased to find Daniel with me, particularly after he introduced himself only as an old colleague.
She told us that a neighbor’s doorbell camera had captured part of the incident. The angle was distant and partially blocked by hedges, but the footage showed Jake running from the house. Brian caught him near the driveway. Scott followed. Warren appeared seconds later.
“What happens after that?” I asked.
“The view is obstructed.”
“But it proves they lied.”
“It proves their initial account was incomplete.”
Daniel glanced at me, silently reminding me not to push.
Detective Ortiz continued. “We also have a witness who heard shouting. Based on the medical report and video, we have sufficient cause to bring all three men in for further questioning.”
“Are they being arrested?”
“Decisions will be made after consultation with the district attorney.”
