PART 2: I LET MY FAMILY BELIEVE I WAS STILL THE SAME MAN… THEN I REVEALED THE TRAP I HAD BEEN PREPARING

I almost laughed.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“For the first time in four years, I understand everything.”

She stepped closer.

“You were gone. You weren’t here. You don’t know what it was like.”

I looked at Lucy.

“My wife had cancer.”

Nobody spoke.

“She was losing weight.”

Silence.

“She lost her hair.”

Silence.

“She was sleeping outside.”

My voice became colder.

“And you’re telling me I don’t know what it was like?”

My mother looked uncomfortable.

But Brianna still looked angry.

“She always played the victim.”

I turned toward her.

“My wife?”

“Yes.”

Brianna rolled her eyes.

“She was always weak. Always sick. Always needing something.”

I stared at her.

Then I smiled.

Not because I was happy.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

“You know what’s interesting?”

Nobody answered.

“I spent four years believing you were taking care of my wife.”

I walked toward the table where my suitcase sat.

“But while I was away, I learned something.”

I opened it.

Inside was a folder.

Theresa’s expression changed.

“What is that?”

I placed it on the table.

“The reason I came home early.”

Nobody moved.

“The reason I didn’t tell anyone I was coming.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Receipts.

Medical records.

And copies of messages.

Lucy looked confused.

“Nathan… what is this?”

I looked at my wife.

“This is proof.”

Three weeks before I returned, I received an unexpected email.

It was from an old coworker in Canada.

His name was Marcus.

He had known me for years.

He had seen how hard I worked.

He had also noticed something strange.

Every time I spoke about Lucy, my expression changed.

Because even from thousands of miles away, he knew something was wrong.

One night, after seeing one of my video calls with Lucy, he asked:

“Nathan… does your wife always look that tired?”

I defended her.

“She’s probably just stressed.”

But Marcus didn’t let it go.

A few days later, he sent me something.

A photograph.

Lucy.

Standing outside a grocery store.

Wearing the same old blouse she had worn in our last video call.

Looking exhausted.

Holding a small bag of medication.

Then he sent another.

My mother.

Driving a brand-new SUV.

Then another.

Brianna.

Outside her newly opened salon.

My stomach dropped.

Because I realized something.

The money wasn’t disappearing.

It was being spent.

Just not on the person I sent it for.

I hired a private investigator.

At first, I only wanted answers.

But what I found was worse than betrayal.

It was a plan.

The investigator discovered that my mother had been telling people Lucy was “unstable.”

She had convinced neighbors that Lucy was irresponsible.

She had even told relatives that Lucy was lucky to have a husband who “put up with her.”

Meanwhile, Lucy had been isolated.

No phone.

No transportation.

No access to the money I earned.

They controlled everything.

Including her treatment.

Then I found the message that destroyed me.

A text from Theresa to Brianna.

“Keep her quiet until Nathan finishes the contract. Once the settlement comes through, we won’t need to pretend anymore.”

Settlement.

That word caught my attention.

Because they knew something I had never told them.

I looked at my family.

“You want to know why I came home today?”

Nobody answered.

I smiled.

“Because I received a settlement.”

Theresa’s eyes widened.

Brianna immediately leaned forward.

“How much?”

There it was.

The question I had been waiting for.

Not:

“Is Lucy okay?”

Not:

“How serious is her cancer?”

Not:

“Why didn’t we know?”

Only:

“How much?”

I looked at them.

“A million dollars.”

The silence was instant.

Theresa’s entire face changed.

“A million?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Brianna stepped closer.

“Mom… did you hear that?”
