On the first day of our marriage, my husband threw a greasy dishcloth in my face and said, “From now on, you’re my family’s maid.” I smiled, left my wedding ring on the table, and walked out with my suitcase.

He could keep it.

I wanted no argument that I had taken something that belonged to his family.

Downstairs, Mason shouted.

“Olivia!”

I closed the suitcase.

“Those dishes better be done before Mom starts lunch!”

I pulled up the handle.

His voice grew louder.

“Olivia!”

The suitcase wheels thudded against every stair.

By the time I reached the bottom, all three of them were staring at me.

Carol’s face drained of color.

“What are you doing?”

I adjusted my purse.

“Taking your advice.”

Mason stood.

“What advice?”

“You said I shouldn’t live here for free.”

I smiled.

“So I won’t live here.”

Carol stepped forward.

“Do not embarrass yourself over something this ridiculous.”

“I’m not embarrassed.”

“You’re leaving your husband because he asked you to wash dishes?”

“No.”

I looked directly at Mason.

“I’m leaving because my husband threw garbage at my face and announced that marriage made me his family’s servant.”
