On the first day of our marriage, my husband threw a greasy dishcloth in my face and said, “From now on, you’re my family’s maid.” I smiled, left my wedding ring on the table, and walked out with my suitcase.

For forty minutes, I told her everything.

The rag.

The orders.

Mason trying to grab me.

The threats.

The money.

His family showing up at my parents’ home.

Savannah finding me.

Then I handed Rachel my phone.

She read Mason’s messages from numbers I hadn’t blocked yet.

You’re going to regret humiliating me.

My family knows people all over this city.

You think your parents can protect you forever?

I can make sure nobody wants to work with you again.

Rachel put my phone down.

“Save all of this in three places.”

“I already backed it up.”

“Good.”

She looked at me.

“And from now on, do not meet him privately.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“People often change their plans when somebody they once loved starts apologizing.”

I said nothing.

She leaned forward.

“You married the version of him he showed you before the wedding. You are now dealing with the version who believes the contract is signed and the performance is over.”
