MY WIFE LEFT ME ALONE WITH OUR SIX LITTLE GIRLS FOR HER RICH BOSS

What I felt, instead, was my daughter taking my hand.

Audrey walked to the center of the floor where the box still sat, and she turned to the 150 people who had just watched the truth come out.

“I’d like to dance with my parent,” she said. “The one who stayed. The one who learned ten shades of pink.”

She held out her hand to me.

And six daughters — my six girls, the baby from the hallway now fifteen and taller than me — gathered around their old man on a dance floor while a room full of people stood and cried and clapped.

I had spent fifteen years being invisible on purpose. Signing another woman’s name. Making sure my daughters felt mothered by a ghost so they wouldn’t feel abandoned by a real person.

And my eldest had seen all of it. The whole time. She’d just been waiting until she had a room big enough to say thank you in.
