When Audrey found the folder at nineteen, something in her went very still and very certain.
She didn’t rage. My Audrey is like the deep part of a river — quiet on top, strong enough underneath to move stone.
She just said: “So every card was you. And she signed us away on paper.” She folded the relinquishment back into the folder. “Okay, Dad. Okay.”
I didn’t know what “okay” meant.
I found out at her wedding, four years later, in front of 150 people.
Chapter 4: The Box

“Sweetheart, we’re finally together again,” she said, loud enough for the room. “You have to understand — back then, everything was your FATHER’S FAULT.”
The whole reception heard it. That was the point.
