My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

“And Trevor?”

“Probably Trevor too.” Howard’s mouth tightened. “It wouldn’t surprise me if she’s been telling him for months that he’s about to be disinherited.”

That was the piece that finally made it all fit. A frightened, vain man. A wife who understood exactly which fears to feed. A loan from people like Voss, borrowed not for any business but to buy her silence about his affair. And once she had been paid, she had gone straight on planning to take the rest.

“She also filed something this afternoon,” Howard said.

I looked at him.

“An emergency petition in probate court. She’s asking for a temporary guardian over your financial affairs, citing erratic behavior, the sudden sale of a major asset, and your son’s testimony that you’ve been confused.”

“My son’s testimony.”

“A sworn statement. Signed this morning, an hour before he showed up at your gate.”
