Silence.
Not a surprised silence.
Not the kind of silence that comes from someone trying to understand a ridiculous sentence.
This was different.
It was the silence of someone who had been expecting a conversation and suddenly realized it had arrived sooner than planned.
Finally, Nancy said, “Well… I think it could be interesting.”
I gripped the phone.
“What?”
“Don’t get upset. I’m just saying that maybe it’s not necessarily a bad thing.”
“Have you and Alex discussed this?”
Another pause.
“Not exactly.”
“Nancy.”
She sighed.
“Alex mentioned it to me a few days ago. I thought he was joking at first.”
My stomach tightened.
A few days ago.
Before Sean had brought it up at dinner.
Before I had even heard the suggestion.
I sat down slowly.
“So our husbands discussed this with each other before either of them told us?”
“I don’t know how the conversation started.”
“But you knew about it.”
