The Phone Call That Changed Everything
The next morning, I called Nancy.
I didn’t tell Sean.
I didn’t want him standing nearby, listening for her reaction.
I needed to hear what my best friend would say when she believed we were speaking privately.
Nancy answered on the fourth ring.
“Hey! What’s up?”
I took a breath.
“Did Sean talk to Alex about something unusual recently?”
There was a pause.
“What do you mean?”
I knew that tone. Nancy used it whenever she was trying to decide how much information to reveal.
“Sean suggested that we swap husbands for a week.”
Silence.
Not a surprised silence.
Not the kind of silence that comes from someone trying to understand a ridiculous sentence.
This was different.
It was the silence of someone who had been expecting a conversation and suddenly realized it had arrived sooner than planned.
Finally, Nancy said, “Well… I think it could be interesting.”
